Choosing Mobile App Free Trial Length

Set trial length from time-to-value, repeat use, payback speed and attribution clarity

Definition

A subscription-app free trial delays the first charge while giving a user access to the paid experience. Its length affects how long the product has to demonstrate value and how quickly an acquisition cohort produces payment and renewal data.

Perspectives

Jake Castillo (2026-08-21, X)

RevenueCat's analysis of more than 115,000 subscription apps found a 42.5% median trial-to-paid conversion rate for 17–32-day trials versus 25.5% for trials of four days or less; more than half of three-day trial cancellations happened on Day 0, compared with roughly 31% for 30-day trials. Do not optimize trial-to-paid conversion alone: track download-to-paid conversion, CAC payback, first renewal and revenue per install.

Set trial length to the time needed for first proof, one repeat cycle and a small decision window. Immediate-value products can test a short or absent trial; products whose value compounds through habit, progress or accumulated data need enough time for the user to see that change. Cal AI used a short loop because its food-scan result appeared in seconds.

Treat delay to payment as an attribution cost: overlapping creator and campaign cohorts make it harder to tell which source produced revenue. Test in this order: access model (hard paywall, trial or freemium), meaningful trial windows, offer architecture, then the activation path. Judge the result on activation, Day-35 download-to-paid conversion, CAC payback, first renewal and LTV by acquisition source.

Use freemium when free activity builds habit or data, improves a network, spreads the product or naturally leads to a separate premium outcome. The cited RevenueCat figures were 10.7% median Day-35 download-to-paid conversion for hard paywalls versus 2.1% for freemium, while retained annual subscribers after one year were 27% and 28% respectively.

How to apply

  • Fits a subscription app that can measure a retained user's first value event and first repeat behavior; establish those before changing the trial.
  • A small operator with sparse creator or paid cohorts may prefer a shorter feedback loop than a high-volume app that can wait for mature cohorts and separate them cleanly.
  • Test after Mobile App Onboarding and Paywall can deliver the same activation event across variants, otherwise onboarding changes contaminate the comparison.
  • Keep source-level cohorts through first renewal; Singular is the adjacent attribution layer, while RevenueCat is the cited subscription benchmark and implementation option.

Limits

  • The RevenueCat report is described through Jake Castillo's post rather than preserved as a first-party report, so sample definitions and segment distributions were not independently checked.
  • Cal AI results and operating logic are the author's own case; trial length, price, category and creator mix are not isolated causal variables.
  • The post does not provide statistical significance, cohort sizes or experiment durations for the recommended test sequence.
