Separating Awareness from Paying Acquisition Channels
Rank channels by paying customers and give high-attention low-conversion channels an awareness role
Definition
A channel-role tactic distinguishes reach, clicks and citations from paying-customer acquisition, then assigns each channel a job consistent with what it actually produces.

Rank channels by paying customers rather than visible attention. LinkedIn, YouTube and word of mouth reportedly produced 80% of ChatSEO's paying customers, while Reddit produced one million views in two months and tens of thousands of clicks but very few payments. Treat Reddit as top-of-funnel awareness rather than a revenue channel.
An existing YouTube audience shortened the cold start, and video also served as an AI-search citation asset. On ChatSEO's own site, two bottom- or mid-funnel pages per week became close to its largest customer source across Google and reported AI citations.
How to apply
- Fits a product with channel-tagged signup and payment events; without attribution, role labels remain anecdotes.
- Use Getting Your First 100 Users on Reddit for trust and learning, not as evidence that impressions become revenue.
- Measure video discovery and citations separately through Publishing YouTube Demos for Google AI Citations.
- Route owned-page work through Sequencing Conversion Pages Before Top-Funnel Content.
Limits
- The 80% share groups three channels and does not separate their contribution, cost or retention.
- Reddit and SEO results are founder self-reports, and attribution between branded search, AI citations, word of mouth and prior audiences is unresolved.
